Unfortunately, we have several dozen inactive members (who registered on this site, but have not visited/posted recently). We're going to make allowances for work, family, illness, etc. That being said, our community needs active participation. What (inactive members) policy should we adopt?
No deletion (for any reason)
Deletion after 6 months of inactivity (no login, posts, etc.)
Deletion after 3 months of inactivity (no login, posts, etc.)
Deletion after 1 month of inactivity (no login, posts, etc.)
I don't know if a complete deletion of accounts is the best way to go, on the other hand as you said McCaslin, there are several advantages if we do get rid of inactive members. Now before I decide what to vote for, I'd like to ask you something. Is it technically possible to "restrict" inactive members after a certain amount of time? So it says that they were inactive for a set amount of time and they need to login/post in order to lift the restriction (also telling them that the account might get deleted after a certain amount of time if they don't login/post). I think it would at least give them a chance before the account just gets deleted with no warning.
I just scoured the admin panel... and I don't see any way to automate this. We can set automations that would remove a tag (like "verified") after X number of days, but I don't see another way to "restrict" members. I do agree with you (about deletion-without-warning). We could send a form-letter(s) to those in danger of account deletion... but these form letters (and the account deletion) will have to be hand-written/cranked.
I doubt engin allows for this but I'd have it so there is an inactive members list and after awhile of inactivity you get put there. You wouldn't be counted as a regular member in any sort of census tally of the groups membership or strength. If they come back, they can go back into the regular list.
Probably can't technically fit that into engin though.
I like daz's idea, as someone who drops off grid occasionally because I need to be out of contact with anyone to recharge, sometimes months at a time, an inactive temp tag would be great...
I'm not sure (yet) if it's practical to have an "inactive tag", but we can definitely have a list of inactive members who are not subject to deletion. I want to err on the side of caution. If you expect to return, we'll keep you on the roster.
